How much exercise is too much exercise?
You hear about people who run marathons, who spend their days at the gym – sometimes multiple times! As healthy as they seem, this looks a bit extreme to you. In the end, you need to rest sometimes, right? Well, things are not so simple. There are many factors that can influence how much exercise is too much. Take a look at this:
- You shouldn’t exercise more than 4-5 days per week because your body needs time to recover. You are not a professional athlete and you are not getting ready for a competition. 4-5 sessions of fitness or jogging per week is more than enough to keep you fit and healthy. More than this is not only exhausting, but it can also hurt you.
- Do not exercise if you have pain. Of course, there is a certain amount of pain involved in exercise. Your muscles will hurt a bit after you run for a few miles or lift heavy weights, and this is alright. However, if you have pain in your joints, knees or back you should stop immediately and see a doctor. You can get seriously injured if you continue to practice any sport.
- Think about what level of exercise you can handle. If you work out with your friends, things can get pretty competitive. You want to see which one can do more squats, who will jump higher, or who will run the longest. On the other hand, this can become dangerous if you don’t know your limits. Don’t push your body too much.
- Start slowly and take your time. When you want to lose weight, you want it to happen overnight. The sooner the better! As much as you are tempted to go jogging every day, this can make you vulnerable to injuries that will keep you in bed for weeks. If you are a beginner, take it slowly.
